在东京下町的一家小型金属加工工厂，生活着木下父女俩，父亲木下圭介（丰川悦司 饰）是工厂里的技师，圭介的妻子妙子八年前生下女儿后便撒手人寰了，圭介答应妻子会照顾好女儿美雨（芦田爱菜 饰）。清晨，圭介早早起来准备早饭，美雨在整理书包时，不小心将自己的跳绳遗忘在了玄关。美雨走后，圭介发现了，急忙送去学校。正在上体育课的美雨因忘带跳绳而沮丧着，看到爸爸送来了跳绳，阴沉的小脸立马晴了起来。圭介还答应为明天要出门远足的美雨买一个新水壶。工厂一共就四个人，社长中村富美夫（蟹江敬三 饰），宗田清（点点 饰）和后辈员工胜田秋生（三浦翔平 饰），秋生在搬运工厂内的货物时，货物失去平衡掉落砸中了在工作的圭介的头部。失去意识的圭介被送往医院。所幸很快便恢复了意识，但被告知患上了青年性老年痴呆。另一方面，社长的女儿，已经出嫁了的西肋茜（中谷美纪 饰）回到了工厂，将带来的行李搬到了结婚前自己住的房间，闭口不提自己的事情。随着圭介的病情恶化，父女俩该如何面对这样的现实呢？肋茜又是因为什么独自回娘家的呢……
